The Illawarra Grammar School is a dynamic educational centre that encourages each student to pursue the highest level of academic excellence, personal achievement and fulfilment of which they are capable. Our School, also known as TIGS, is situated in the City of Wollongong, which is the commercial and cultural centre of the Illawarra region of NSW. TIGS is a non-selective day school for boys and girls. Opened in 1959, we have over 900 students currently enrolled.

TIGS has a well-established and acknowledged reputation for delivering academic programmes of excellence, within a nurturing and caring environment, based on Christian values. The school has excellent modern facilities set on a beautiful campus with award winning landscaping and design. Students feel safe, secure and happy in a caring and friendly learning environment.

TIGS has a strong academic focus. Every year TIGS students achieve outstanding results in the Higher School Certificate examinations. In 2018: the top ATAR result was 99.6 and 43 students were identified as ‘distinguished achievers’ by the Board of Studies for achieving 90% or more in individual Higher School Certificate courses. 95% of students received early admission into university and 2 students received Premier's All Rounders acknowledgement for achieving the highest band in 20 units. 6 students were nominated by Board of Studies examiners for exhibition in showcase events for elite students in the areas of Dance, Music, Design & Technology and Visual Arts.

Accommodation

International students are accommodated in homestay living with an Australian family. Homestay offers a unique opportunity for students to experience Australian lifestyle and culture in a safe, friendly and caring ‘home away from home’ environment. Homestay also provides opportunities for students to practice their English in real life situations and guardianship can be provided for students under 18 years of age who are not living in Australia with a parent or nominated relative.

The School’s holistic approach to learning is reflected in the genuine care and nurturing that is provided for all students. Regular contact with a staff mentor, supported by the expertise of professional counselling staff as well as an International Dean is seen as the basis of care for the academic, spiritual, physical, aesthetic, cultural, social and emotional needs of the student.

The school provides student welfare policies and pastoral care programs that develop a sense of self-worth and foster personal development.

English as second language

English as second language:-

The School’s Centre for English offers ELICOS to high school age international students, and is accredited by NEAS, the National Accreditation Scheme for English Language Teaching Centres.

The School’s Centre for English provides a high quality English course to prepare students for the Senior School. The Centre for English is wholly owned by TIGS and is located within the school campus giving students full access to all TIGS facilities and support services.

Special programs

Gifted and Talented Programme, Talented Athletes Programme, Community Service Programmes, Language and Culture clubs, Academic Challenge Programmes, Overseas tours and TIGSTech team.

For students interested in the performing Arts and music, private music tuition is available with fully qualified professional musicians conducting the lessons.

Students are also encouraged to join one of the many school ensembles which perform regularly at concerts inside and outside the school and at many other school events.

Sports

Each student is provided with the opportunity to train in a number of sports and activities under the expert tuition of qualified and experienced coaches. The school also provides a Sport and Outdoor Education Programme and this provides students with the opportunity to experience education outside the classroom through a structured and sequential outdoor education program. During these experiences, students learn to work as a team and to face various challenges.

Application process

The School will require any proposed student to attend an interview with a nominated agent of the School in the student’s home country, or with a nominated person from the School if in Australia. International Students should complete English and ability testing through Australian Education Assessment Services (AEAS) or other testing agencies approved by the School. To enter Years 7-10, students must have a minimum IELTS (Academic) score of 5.0, or equivalent. To enter Year 11 students must have a minimum IELTS (Academic) score of 5.5, or equivalent. Students who do not meet the English language requirement as detailed above, may be offered a place in the School’s Centre for English to study ELICOS.

Wollongong is located on the east coast of Australia, only a 1-hour drive south from Sydney airport and is one of Australia’s most livable regional cities. Wollongong is the third largest city in NSW and the tenth largest city in Australia. It is located in a narrow coastal strip and home to 200,000 residents.

It is a culturally diverse city and has a long history of welcoming families from around the world, who now live, work or study in the region. It has strong economic and cultural links to much of Asia.

Wollongong is the heart of the Illawarra region enjoying a magnificent natural environment from rainforests to spectacular sea cliffs and unspoilt beaches.

Higher Tertiary Education University of Wollongong (UOW)

The University of Wollongong (UOW), located close to the School, has a well established reputation and is consistently ranked among the top Australian universities for the quality of its teaching, research, graduate employment outcomes, student experience and its inspiring environment.

UOW highly values its ongoing association with TIGS and is pleased to offer TIGS International students a range of benefits to facilitate a smooth transition from High School to UOW.

The benefits include; Inclusion in the UOW Early Admission program whereby successful students receive an offer to UOW before they sit their final HSC or IB exams; three (3) additional ATAR points for being a TIGS student; a further three (3) additional ATAR points for high performance in subjects studied at TIGS that are relevant to the corresponding UOW degree.

Curriculum

TIGS is the 2nd school in NSW to be authorized to deliver the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme, Middle Years Programme and Diploma Programme. The IB Programme runs parallel with the Higher School Certificate.
