Takapuna Grammar School is a state co-educational secondary school of around 1845, including 82 International Students from throughout the world. It was established in 1927 and is one of Auckland’s historic grammar schools with a long proud history and a fine tradition of academic and personal success. It provides high quality, balanced education in a positive teaching and learning environment. Students are assisted to reach their full potential and are challenged to strive constantly for excellence in their academic, cultural, social, recreational and sporting activities. They learn in an ICT rich environment with an emphasis on developing those skills and competencies that will be needed to be part of a rapidly changing world.

Tuition costs

Annual tuition fee is $16250 plus an administration fee of $2000.

Accommodation

Takapuna Grammar School can arrange homestays – cost $320 per week with an accommodation support fee of $400.

Student support

The school has a dedicated International Faculty with 8 staff providing support to International Students. This includes first language Deans in Korean and Chinese. An Academic Dean monitors progress towards learning outcomes and career ambitions. Students can also access the full range of Student Support structures including career and personal counselling, support for university access and health care.

English as second language

ESOL programme are provided in addition to mainstream subjects in Year 9 -11. English for Academic Purposes (EAP) supports students to gain literacy for NCEA and University Entry (UE). In addition, there is a semester long Academic Preparation Programme (APP) at Year 11 for those students who choose to gain an orientation to the New Zealand education system and skills needed for NCEA or IB.

Sports

As with most New Zealand schools, Takapuna Grammar School has a wide range of sporting, cultural, leadership and service opportunities within the school. International Students are encouraged to access these. The International Faculty also assists students to access those extra-curricular activities they already participate in within the local community.

Application process

Students can apply either directly or through one of the school’s overseas and local agents. Where it is seen to be advantageous, students may be interviewed prior to an offer being made. All students are tested on arrival as part of the process of ensuring they are individually provided with the best course to meet their aims and strengths.

Features of the local area

Takapuna Grammar School is situated on the North Shore of Auckland, New Zealand’s largest city. It is a short ferry ride to the CBD, the administrative and business centre of Auckland. Adjacent to the Waitemata Harbour and Rangitoto Island, The North Shore is fringed with beaches and parks, and provides a clean and safe environment for those living there. There are also a number of shopping precincts and malls within easy distance.

Curriculum

In the junior school (Years 9 – 10) we follow the New Zealand Curriculum, In the Senior School, there is a wide range of subject choices and two assessment pathways. The National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA). And International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP). Takapuna Grammar School was the first New Zealand state school to be granted accreditation to deliver the IBDP.
