Description We are enriched by a proud heritage, but forward-looking and progressive in our task of educating boys to meet the challenges of the new millennium. Boys come to us from all over New Zealand, and from many countries overseas. The historic town of Oamaru is safe and secure, and within easy reach of inland lakes and mountains, and the University City of Dunedin.
Tuition costs

Our costs for the tuition here is $ 12 500.00 with our accommodation of $10 125.00. There are other costs including Term break accommodation costs, administration cost.

Accommodation

The students will be expected to reside in the Boarding School – Don House. Staff at Don House all have a vested interest in your boys and will endeavour to make their transition from home life to Hostel life as seamless as possible. If you have any queries regarding your son’s time in Don House, please feel free to contact any of the Staff at Don House.

The team leaders all have families of their own, so know what it is like to create a welcoming and positive environment for your son. I am proud of the role that Don House has within Waitaki Boys High School and I am excited about the opportunities Hostel life will create for your son. The staff at Don House are the protectors and nurturers of our next generation. It is our responsibility to ensure that the boys that pass through here are equipped to become a future leaders, to be responsible, able and confident. We want them to model the values of Don House in all aspects of their daily life and to achieve their full potential in academic, cultural, sporting and social activities. It is the hope of the Don House family that your son will make the most of the opportunities afforded to him to make his time here enjoyable and memorable and that your son will leave here as an educated all-rounder of outstanding character.

Student support

Each year level has a Dean, they are there to support your son, to reach his potential and goals. In the boarding house the Hostel manager and matron are support for the boys during their stay at the boarding House.

Each week the Health Nurse and the Physio come to school to help any students that have any worries. The Guidance Councillor is also available to help if a student is troubled and needs assistance.

We have learning Assistance Department and very experienced staff to work with or alongside our students.

Type of programs Long-term programs (study for 1 year or more), Short-term programs (study for 3-6-9 month), Study Groups, At Waitaki we are open to enquiries on all courses of study, short or long term.
English as second language

We provide Level 1 or Level 2 NCEA ESOL, one of the main aspects of this course is improving English language skills, reading, writing, listening and speaking. Help is provided in any chosen subject, especially in the understanding of questions and instructions in assignments.

Sports

Students are encouraged to get involved with at least one or more sporting activities. We offer over 30 sports from Archery, Rugby, Cricket, Trap shooting, Rowing, Football and many more.

Other activities include Youth Orchestra, Chamber music, Music lessons ,Big Choir, Spelling, Mastermind House quiz competition, Debating.

Students can take time to help out on the school farm. A place where skills are gained and they learn about animal husbandry.

Application process

First step in the enrolment process is to complete the application form and send it to the school. Once the application is received, our Rector will look at it, if he approves the application we then sent and invoice for tuition and accommodation. Once payment is made then a receipt and offer of place is issued.

Features of the local area

Waitaki Boys’ High School is situated at the north end of the town of Oamaru or Te Oha-a-maru, South Island of New Zealand.

The population is only 13 850 people and the climate is classified as Oceanic with tempartures’ averaging 9.0 C in the winter and 20.7 C in the summer.

The town features limestone buildings, provided for over many years from a quarry west of the town (Oamaru Stone).

The gateway to the southern lakes and Oamaru is the end point for the Alps to Ocean cycle trail.

Little Blue and Yellow eyed penguins live off our coastline, and the public are able to view these birds in their own habitat.
