Whanganui High School is a high-achieving co-educational school on the wild and beautiful west coast of the North Island of New Zealand. 
Whanganui is a safe, small and friendly river city with an attractive. It has a strong sense of community, is one of the prettiest cities in New Zealand and is within easy reach of major cities and central North Island National Parks.
Whanganui High School has a proven record of academic excellence. We offer an extensive range of subjects and the emphasis in the senior school is on preparing students for a university education and vocational pathways.
We are excellent at giving our students a well-rounded education with strengths in Mathematics, Arts and Performing Arts, Sport. We offer a huge variety of extra-curricular activities.

For over twenty years we have successfully hosted International Students at Whanganui High School. Our thriving International Department delivers quality care and education to students from many countries. They have full academic and personal support 24/7. We know that when our students are safe and happy, they achieve to their full potential.

Tuition costs

Basic package – one or two classes of ESOL NZ$13 250 per annum, Premium Package NZ$15 000 per annum – more than two classes of ESOL as required, maximum 5 classes.

Accommodation

Homestay accommodation is fully organised by the school – NZ$11 250 per annum (NZ$250 per week) including all meals, wifi and a home from home environment.

Student support

There are two staff available 24/7 for emergencies, the Dean is the student advocate. The safety and well-being of our International Students is our number 1 priority.
For students to use when needed, there are also two school counsellors and a school nurse.
There is a full ESOL program for beginners right through to advanced level, a free weekly IELTS class after school once a week and assistance to sit the IELTS exam.
Monthly trips to places of interest.
A 3 day trip Central North Island and Lower North Island/Wellington.
A full outdoor education program with 8 activities per term, at no extra cost.
Free musical instrument tuition during the school day – this needs to be requested on the application form.
Free peer tutoring when students need help with their studies.
After school homework club.
There are many opportunities to take part in performing art activities i.e. Chamber Music, rock bands, brass band, choir etc.

Full timetable program: NCEA English Language and Communication, Levels 1, 2, 3. NCEA English internal assessments Levels 1, 2, 3 (dedicated ESOL class with maximum of 12 students)

Application process

The application form needs to be filled in thoroughly, but there is no requirement to pass any tests; a test is given on arrival. If a student has very little English, they need to start in Year 9 or 10.

Features of the local area

Whanganui is a town of 43,000 people. It has many historical buildings and is extremely pretty with the Whanganui river as its main feature. Our wild west coast beaches have a stunning, rugged beauty with opportunities for swimming and fishing.

Whanganui has a vibrant arts scene with galleries of international standing and the museum has a large and important collection of Maori artefacts. Whanganui has NZ’s only glass art school. Performing Arts are important to Whanganui and the beautiful Whanganui Opera House is a stunning, historical building. Opera Week is held there every year and there is a thriving drama and music scene throughout the year. 
Sports are also important to Whanganui people and you can find a huge number of sports in the community.

If you want to enjoy a relaxed lifestyle in a beautiful setting, friendly Whanganui is a great place to be and if you want to explore other places in the North Island, from Whanganui you can easily reach Tongariro National Park and the ski slopes in an hour and a half. Auckland is an hour away by plane. Massey University is only an hour away by car and you can reach Wellington in 2.5 hours, a day trip away.
