St Matthew’s Collegiate School is an Anglican school founded in 1914 and based in the beautiful town of Masterton, an easy commute from Wellington. The school has a proud tradition of providing for girls a broad education including academic, cultural and sporting opportunities. We also have a strong focus on values. With a total roll of around 300, we offer expert ESOL support, excellent pastoral care and sound academic teaching to a select group of up to 15 international students.

Student support

There is a strong focus on pastoral care for all students. The Dean of International Students and the Dean of Boarding have key roles in ensuring the academic and social wellbeing of girls from overseas. There are regular social events to celebrate birthdays or socialize with the international boys from Rathkeale College. The ESOL Department is well resourced and students receive tuition in English tailored to their needs, along with support in other learning areas.

Sports

St Matthew’s offers a huge range of sports including hockey, netball, basketball, badminton, target shooting, cycling, athletics, swimming, cricket, tennis and equestrian sports. Tuition is available in a variety of musical instruments including piano, violin, guitar, drums, wind instruments and voice, (fees apply). We have several successful choirs and a school orchestra. Other interests such as ballet and golf can be accommodated on request.

Application process

Students need to provide a report from their current school. There is no English language requirement, excepting for students wishing to enrol for NCEA, who must be able to complete a mainstream course with all subjects taught in English.

Features of the local area

Masterton was voted New Zealand’s most beautiful town in 2017. It is surrounded by farms and vineyards and offers lots of opportunities to explore beaches and forests, as well as some charming towns. Larger cities such as Wellington and Palmerston North are only a short commute away.

Curriculum

The New Zealand curriculum is taught throughout the school. English, Mathematics, Science, Physical Education and Social Studies are the core subjects in the Middle School. Option choices include Music, Drama, Art, Languages, (Japanese, and French), Taha Maori, Design, (Soft Materials), Food and Nutrition and Digital Technology. At Senior College, there are even more options as students begin to specialise in subjects needed for a career pathway.
