Located six miles from Washington, DC, in Silver Spring, Maryland, Barrie is an 18 mos. to 12th-grade coed Prep school which successfully integrates International students through Project-Based Learning, advisories, and electives, offering them a full American Independent School experience.

Accommodation

We have many options. Students can stay with a Barrie parent, staff or faculty member in Homestay. We also have a faculty run International House for three International students just off campus. The host is the EFL teacher/International Program Coordinator. Students can also stay at agent provided Homestay arrangements.

Barrie's International Student Program Coordinator plans events throughout the year that include pumpkin carving during Halloween, a Chinese New Year celebration, and a trip to Hershey Park, plus two overnight trips to explore American life and recreation. Each year, an International student is chosen to be the International Representative to the Student Government Association (SGA).

English as second language

In addition to the required coursework, students take an English as a Foreign Language (EFL) class each year. There, they read and learn about American culture as an extension of the core Humanities classes.

Sports

Barrie is unique in that it has an Equestrian program. We have 7 horses that students can sign up to take riding lessons with. We also have soccer, volleyball, basketball, girls’ lacrosse, cross country, flag football, yoga and fitness training facilities. Barrie also has a robust Theater program performing two shows per year.

Application process

MS Students take the TOEFL Jr., US students take the TOEFL or IELTS. All students will have an interview either in person or via Skype or WeChat. Students also require an online application as well as two teacher recommendations.

Barrie is located 6 miles from Washington DC and utilize the Capital city as way to reinforce our studies. We are also 1 mile from the closest subway station so we are able to visit museums and other educational exhibits to enhance learning.

Curriculum

Our curriculum is college preparatory focused using Project Based Learning strategies. Students learn to work collaboratively to answer an essential question by researching, interviewing, synthesizing information and then presenting their findings to a larger group of people. We teach Critical Thinking skills and encourage individual thinking. We teach over 11 different AP classes including Ap Chemistry, AP Calculus, AP Statistics and AP Psychology, AP European History and others.
