Morrinsville College

Julie Radice

International Director

Description

The staff and Board of Morrinsville College strive very hard to ensure that every student who chooses to come to our school is nurtured and well-educated in a safe environment. Every student matters and that is why we invest in our pastoral care system. Our school is very proud to have Jacinda Ardern (NZ’s former Prime Minister) as one of our many successful alumni. The international learning area is small and friendly so all students receive personalised and undivided attention. With leadership opportunities, multiple pathways to follow, excellent facilities and choices of subjects, with very good academic results our school is very popular and we look forward to welcoming more International students.

Student support

International Director meets students regularly to check on pathways and progress. The English Language teacher tests students regularly to see progress. We have an excellent pastoral care system. Counsellors in their own language can be sourced from an outside agency. All international students have a home room which is staffed at every break with a homework club and extra NCEA lessons after school so students can discuss issues or ask for advice/help with their work. There are international student leaders and advisors and we also run a buddy system.

Type of programs Long-term programs (study for 1 year or more), Short-term programs (study for 3-6-9 month), We can accept small groups in Term 2 or 4 only.
English as second language

After testing, students will be placed in English Language classes according to ability and will also participate on mainstream classes or will go straight to mainstream classes if the English Language is not needed. The English language classes are small, offering excellent tuition.

Sports

We have 27 different sports to choose from. We always compete very strongly with schools that are bigger than ours with several of our outstanding sportspeople gaining honours at regional and national levels each year. We offer equestrian, adventure racing, lacrosse, mountain biking as well as rugby and football to name but a few.

Facilities

Our College is set in beautiful and extensive surroundings which includes a swimming pool, space for our wide range of sporting activities, a new Performing Arts Centre which is an ideal place to showcase the Arts with a newly refurbished dance and drama studio plus a suite of music rooms.

Our College also includes a working farmlet, a large well stocked library, a swimming pool, a weights room and well equipped classrooms for all of the subjects that are on offer.

We have an outstanding staff who are well qualified, hardworking and committed to providing the best possible classroom environment where we can teach and learn together.

Features of the local area

Morrinsville is heartland at its best. We serve the town of Morrinsville and the surrounding Piako District, which is an intensive dairy farming community. It is situated between the Kamai ranges and the Waikato river on North island of New Zealand. It is only 28 minutes away from Hamilton, NZ’s fourth largest city and is on bus routes to many exciting tourist areas.

Curriculum

Our courses follow NZ curriculum at junior levels and NCEA at all 3 levels for seniors with excellent results. Our curriculum is wide and varied, offering multiple pathways. We have a working farm with Agri-Business and Agri-science on offer. The sporting facilities are excellent with many pitches for different sports, a swimming pool, extensive grounds, a gymnasium and weights room. Participation rates in sports are very high. Our Arts facilities are new, including a dance/drama studio, a music suite of rooms and a Performing Arts Centre so they are also very successful areas. One of our other strengths is Education Outside the Classroom, where we take advantage of the opportunities offered by the wider community and environment. Students learn in a variety of contexts, and they gain the knowledge, skills, attitudes and values required to enjoy a healthy lifestyle.
