Description

Napier Girls’ High School is one of the oldest girls’ schools in New Zealand. We are a traditional girls’ school but we are also very progressive in many aspects of our school life. We set very high standards for our students and our teaching. Students at Napier Girls’ High School consistently excel in their academic work as one of the highest performing schools in provincial New Zealand. We also have an outstanding reputation in sport, performing arts, including music as well as emphasising the importance of well-rounded students who also give service to our community.
We offer a wide range of subjects for our 1000 students which includes all sciences, arts (photography, drama, dance and music) plus Māori, French, Spanish and Japanese.

Napier Girls’ High School has high quality homestay families which are usually part of our school community. We also have a large boarding hostel onsite.

Our international students are fully supported by our International Director, Jo Stickley, and our International Dean, Vicky Lassen. This means we offer a full time support service at school and after school if required.
International students are also offered special events and trips within our beautiful region of Hawke’s Bay through our academic plus programme which includes activities like surfing, horse riding and other engaging local activities. These activities are tailored to meet the interests of our students. In addition, we offer trips to other destinations outside our region like Auckland, Wellington or Rotorua.

We currently have an ESOL programme for short term international students. However, we currently do not run ESOL classes for long-term international students.

Sports

Napier Girls’ offers a vast range of extracurricular Activities. Sports teams range from high performance teams toinclusive all-comers groups. We have particularly strong teams in hockey, netball, football, futsal, basketball, sailing, canoe polo, athletics and swimming. Napier Girls’ also offers an impressive range of performing arts and other extracurricular activities. This includes music tuition in 16 different instruments, several school choirs, kapa haka, dance, drama and debating.
Application process

International students do not have to pass a test to be able to apply. We request references from current schools as part of our application process.
Features of the local area

Napier Girls’ High School is located centrally on the hill overlooking the city of Napier with sprawling views over Hawke’s Bay and the Pacific Ocean. Hawke’s Bay is located on the east coast of the North Island of New Zealand and it offers a mild, mediterranean climate with one of the highest sunshine hours in the country. It is the fruit and wine capital of New Zealand. Napier and Hastings are two sister cities that build our provincial and vibrant community. Napier airport is only 10 minutes drive from our school and has frequent flights (1-1.5hrs) to Wellington, Auckland and Christchurch.

Napier is world renowned for its charming Art Deco architecture which is quite special and sets it apart from other cities in New Zealand. Our region offers many significant festivals which can be enjoyed outdoors thanks to our warm climate.
Curriculum

Napier Girls’ High School follows the New Zealand curriculum and offers NCEA qualifications for our senior students, including university entrance qualifications.
